Are You Building Relationships that Lead to Sales?

Never underestimate the value of building relationships by giving without expectations.

I have a friend I’ve been seeing in networking groups for a while. When we talked, I sometimes gave her suggestions, recommendations of people or tools I thought could help her, and invitations to events I thought she’d find valuable.

I didn’t think she was in my target audience – I just wanted to help her.

One day, she showed up in one of my free masterclasses because she wanted to support me, and I helped her work through some challenges that had been holding her back.

Not long afterward, she said she wanted to work with me – and pay me.

Now, obviously you have to have boundaries.

You have to know what you’re willing to give for free, and what you want to charge for.

It’s important to have a balance.

If you build all your relationships on the basis of trying to sell something, people will sense that you care more about the sale than you do about them.

If you constantly give stuff away for free, without inviting people to your paid offers, they don’t have a chance or a reason to pay you.

But if you help people for the sake of helping them…

While also having clear boundaries regarding what you give for free, and what you reserve for clients…

People will learn that you care about them, that you have great value and expertise, and that your priority is to help them succeed.

Then, they will like and trust you enough that they’re willing to pay you.

Do you have a clear idea of what you give away to build trust, and what you reserve for paying clients?
